Chapter 9

The first kiss

"Hallo! Hallo! What did you just say?"

He queried as if he didn't hear what she said, in pretence that the network was was breaking down.

"I said it's over and am reaping it's over, you can carry on with your life and I will do the same", She said while hanging up the phone.

Craig didn't believe the words were coming from his one and only lover of his life. He thought it would be her friend Brenda, the owner of the cellphone through which they had been communicating over the past eight months since the valentines day. On the other hand he had noted a big change in her behavior over that period of time. She wasn't conversative as she used to be. He was suspicious but never jumped into conclusions. He tried to engage her into serious dialogs but seemingly, her heart had already been won by another being. Meanwhile, he had already finished bunches of Airtime calling her but getting no satisfactory response. He decided to get more Airtime despite having finished all what he had on his pocket.

"Missie please push me with some hundred bags, I want to recharge your phone my girlfriend is playing with my heart", begged Craig to his police friend who was residing at the boys quarter at Mrs Jambe's residence, Craig's order cousin sister from his father's side. She was the one who became Craig's godmother ever since his introduction to the family during his high school days.

"No problem bra, you can have it on the table in my room there", said Missie while throwing the keys for Craig to open the room.

Without wasting time, Craig grabbed the bicycle from Chikondi the first son of Mrs Jambe. He cycled to the area 25 C in Lilongwe where the Jambes relocated from Mzuzu following the transfer of Mr Jambe to work at Kanengo Tobacco Control Commission. Twice on the way he escaped what could be fatal  accidents that could claim his life due to mixed emotions that had engulfed him that morning. After recharging the phone he called her again.

"Hey Brenda can I speak to her again", He started.

"Of course you can it's not Brenda it's me", she said.

"What has come over you? What makes you so stubborn all over sudden? Is there someone taking my place? If it's the pressure from your mates, tell them they are killing me", He fired a series of questions over a phone call.

"Hahahaha!", She started with a laugh before she continued to answer the questions. "Craig! Look when it's over it's over there is no need to know the five Ws plus an H, who, what, where, why when or how, for what? Let's just part ways, if  it's talking we can just as friends".

Okay fine let it be and wish you all the best with your new guy", said Craig while cutting the line without waiting to hear her response.

Meantime, he knew things went sour that warming them in a microwave could change nothing in an attempt to bring her back. After returning the phone to Missie, Craig took a pen an encircled the 6th of October on the calendar as a date that marked the end of his happiness. Missie who was following the trends, with the help of Gresham, the blood Brother of Mrs Jambe, who played a vital role in bringing Craig to the Jambes, who happened to be his classmate at Chimaliro Pvt School in Mzuzu, tried to use every possible wise word to encourage, comfort and strengthen the heart broken Craig. But all this didn't help Craig to return to his daily jovial mood that they all knew him of. Weeks went by, his lost appetite not returning. Missed several meals. Was so devastated, he never thought of anything that could take him out of distressed life he was in.

This worried Gresham so much. He decided to find a means of relieving his stressful life so quicker. He called him to the boys room where they together reasoned over the matter.

"Be a man homie. Be a man. Get over with this. It's been three weeks now since you started mourning this break up. How long are you going to cry over spilt milk? Let bygones be bygones and move on. After all there are a lot of beautiful girls out there", said Gresham in such a successive manner.

"Bro, thank you for your wise words, I feel so much strengthened when I hear you speak with such bold words. I promise I will get over it", said Craig.

"Thus my man we can now go and play some chess at area 25 A market", said Gresham.

"Of course we can but get to know that memories will take time to vanish", He said.

"Yes I know how it hurts my bro. I have been through it. Remember how it ended between me and Mwayi in Mzuzu", said Gresham.

"I remember bro but the scenario is a little different, let me share you a piece of the highlights of some of my experiences with her especially the time we had our first kiss. The moment was such a fascinating that no an onlooker could ever thought of turning their eyes away once they saw it. Both of us standing in such a magical sweet shock perpendicular to the ground that we couldn't imagine losing the ground that was almost already left with an immediate imaginative  float of our feet in the air. If it wasn't for Mr Mbewa's footsteps who was passing through Kabungulure forests, where her Uncle's house was located, the longest kiss of all time was going to be registered on the land of Mabiri. It was our first one on one meeting since she left Mabiri for some boarding school up north at Mzokoto near Mhuju in Rumphi District", he Narrated.
